My understanding is that Beavis and Butt-head is contracted for at
least one more season, according to Mike Judge appearances and
interviews.
Good Vibes was not good. Just an opinion.

But, if I know the world of today, MTV will undoubtedly cancel Beavis
and Butt-head after the next season.
When the new season came on, I took the day off of work to watch the
first episode. After that week, I couldn't afford to do that anymore.
It seems that people became wise to the fact that MTV was posting the
episodes online. I did.

MTV has gone out of their way to NOT promote this show well. Yeah, we
know, as fans when it is on, but I don't see too many commercials for
it, and as far as I can tell, they are not airing the previous season
as reruns, but instead, filling the slot with something else.
They don't treat Beavis and Butt-head like they used to; with care.
For these reasons, MTV will most likely manufacture the demise of this
show.

I would hate to say it, because I am one of the biggest fans of Beavis
and Butt-head you can imagine. I own everything from all of the Mike
Judge collections, to the Time Life collections, to the movie, to the
King Turd collection, but I don't think that our favorite duo is going
to last 2 more seasons if MTV doesn't start pushing them HARD.

This is a different era, with a different understanding on humor.
Office Space came out when people got it. Idiocracy and Extract didn't
fail because they were bad, they failed because they were smart, and
people these days, especially kids, are stupid, and all they can
successfully watch is quick to the punch Attention Deficit designed
humor. Note the success of Family Guy, The Simpsons, and South Park.
These shows have either come out in a modern enough era to help create
the humor that our society accepts today, or they have changed their
ways to adjust to modern society.
Beavis and Butt-head is the same as they have always been, and the
show is just as good as it always was, but the modern world is not
going to get it like we do. I'm 30, and I don't feel that old, but
when I think of my ability to grasp the concepts of these shows and
what they are inadvertently trying to say, THAT makes me feel out of
touch. And that's only because I DO get it.

It's sad, but it's true. And it makes me sad to have to see it this
way, because I would love to have Beavis and Butt-head until I'm old
as hell.

I intend to agree with you on all this. I myself am one of the biggest
fans. Own quite a bit of stuff, even a few t-shirts and boxers! (okay
TMI, ha ha)

I think the big downfall was posting the episodes on mtv.com so SOON
after the airdate. The first episode attracted 3 million viewers, and
by the end of season they struggled to hit a million viewers. It's
because people knew they didn't have to DVR it or anything, they knew
they'd be able to see the show so soon after airing.

Well MTV, I want to see B&B for at least 2 or 3 more seasons, after a
comeback I want to see more than 2 seasons, but please, don't post
anything on your website, when season 9 is done THEN post the
episodes. Until then, let Nielsen show how many fans are still left.
I, for one, will always be one!

Hoo woo woo woo, do it hit hit, Gitter! Ooo ooo ott too OOO! Snuffer
eet HOO doo!

Doesn't MTV track how many hits the show gets on their site? I would
think they would take that into consideration. How does that work?

I'm 20 and agree to a certain extent but I don't think it hasn't
caught on as much this time around because kids aren't getting it. I
doubt 10-13 year olds in 1993 were watching Beavis and Butt-head
because it was such a clever satire on youth and the current state of
society, they liked it just because of the dumb characters and the
really stupid things they did.

B&B set the bar but when it went off air, that bar was raised by
things like South Park and Family Guy. I know there was huge
controversy when B&B first came out... it was groundbreaking. But
these days, kids have seen it all. There's no shock factor to cause
controversy. But no matter, I quite like B&B myself. But it's
definitely a very 90s creation.

I definitely agree that quite a bit of the blame should go to MTV.
Like you said, they didn't promote the show much. There was a bit of
hype before the big return, and that's what led to the large
viewership of the first episode but after that, MTV did little to
support B&B. They never air reruns at all, that pisses me off. They
rerun all of their reality crap but don't show any episodes of B&B. On
top of this, MTV also quickly ran through the episodes. The show
returned in late October of last year and had aired all 12 episodes by
early December. It's like they were just trying to get the show out of
the way to make room for the latest Jersey Shore season.

I appreciate that they put the episodes online though. People are
always washy on that subject but I like to catch up on episodes or re-
watch some of them. I don't have DVR so providing them online and
making money from revenue that way is much smarter than just leaving
people to pirate the episodes.

Anyway, Mike Judge said that he never planned for the return to last
very long. He said he had no long term commitments, so I'm hoping for
a second season but wouldn't expect too much after that.

It's like when MTV brought back Celebrity Deathmatch, only for two
more seasons. I don't understand why that show ever went off the air
the first place; it's a concept that could last forever.

I am hoping for at least one more season. If I can get a season 9, and
even a season 10 I'll thinks its all good.

Yeah, maybe South Park raised the bar, but I don't remember laughing
as much with South Park in recent years as I had with the new season
of B&B.

As far as promotions, other than randoms little things on the
internet, I didn't hear anything about it. I mentioned that B&B was
back to a few of my friends and I don't think any of them had any idea
it was back on.

I definitely think that a lot of kids are not getting it. If they do,
they just pass it off as stupid or semi edgy, but they don't actually
understand that they are directly making fun of modern society with
it. I don't think that kids these days (not all kids of course, not to
generalize, but the kind that watch MTV all day possibly) understand
things like social satire, sarcasm and irony.
Beavis and Butthead is commentary, and this most recent season was
even more so than ever.

If the comedy isn't direct, it's hard for some people to follow.
And as far as I'm concerned, MTV must have been just doing Mike Judge
and that exec who had the idea of bringing B&B back a favor, cause
MTV's promotional team doesn't care.

As stated by someone else on here, MTV didn't play re-runs. On
Thanksgiving, they treated Beavis and Butthead like they didn't
exist.
For being the show that made MTV in the 90's, MTV treats it like a
burden these days, like some unwelcome interruption between reality
television garbage.
When the return was first announced, MTV acted like this was some big
"music videos return" campaign, and that Beavis and Butthead was going
to usher in a new era of music intended television.
Instead, they are just going to let it trickle off, leaving Mike Judge
screwed, and a lot of fans angry.

I, for one, would love to see more, because this latest season was one
of the cleverest seasons ever, and I don't want it to end.

I hope MTV do cancel B&B.
Then it can be picked up by another network that repects it more.

While I loved the recent new season. You can tell MTV was holding Mike
back a little.
Even before the new season started I said it's a mistake going back to
MTV with it.

I wish he could have taken it to Fox for animation domination but as
good of an idea that is, it's practically impossible. The reason is
because MTV owns Beavis and Butt-Head. Back in the 90s, Judge was in
need of money and exposure so he took whatever deal MTV offered him.
They bought the character rights, merchandising rights, everything
from him. He mentions this on an hour long interview he did with
Howard Stern last year that you can find on youtube. MTV owned all of
the rights to B&B and they only paid him a few thousand dollars per
episode. That's one of the reasons why he stopped the show, he was
getting paid very little of what the show was actually making. So MTV
has always been screwing him.

He said that when he went to Fox for King of the Hill, he got a much
more lucrative deal including a small percentage of the rights and
when the show ended, it had topped a billion dollars in sales. So he
lives quite comfortably from that. But just think about it, B&B was a
much bigger show than King of the Hill, it was groundbreaking and a
merchandising blitz for several years but Mike Judge didn't make a
dime from any of the sales. But most importantly, Judge said that when
he returned to make Beavis and Butt-Head again, he was able to
negotiate a certain percentage of the rights back so after 15+ years
he's finally able to make some good money off the show he created.

Viacom owns MTV and thus Beavis & Butt-Head. If MTV cancels the show,
it can always go to Comedy Central, Spike, MTV2, or any other network
owned by them.

I don't think Fox would have treated the show any better to be honest.
For every success they have, there seem to be at least a dozen
cancellations. Even King of the Hill -- a thoroughly consistent show
-- got the shaft in its twilight years.

If MTV don't want a new season I'm sure SpikeTV or Comedy Central
would pick it up. What matters is if Judge wants to do more seasons.

Well no.
Mike brought back the rights to B&B (I believe it was part of contract
of them returning), hence the show now being titled Mike Judge's
Beavis & Butt-Head.

No way did Mike Judge buy back the complete rights to B&B, MTV still
has a large stake as he said in the Stern interview. I don't for a
second believe a corporation like MTV would allow him to purchase the
complete rights to B&B, especially in regards to one of their
strongest ancillary areas (merchandising).

The problem with B&B is that there aren't rock videos to speak of,
just a bunch of Jersey Shore clips. That's one show that appears to
be dumber that B&B, but I don't know because I don't watch it.

The bad thing is that the videos were stripped out of the season DVDs
and the compilations on Netflix or wherever, and I think that killed a
lot of the humor.
